Glasgow Takeaways Are Miles Batter!

Forget the stereotypical Scottish takeaway fare of chips or battered stuff with everything. It’s true that the deep-fried Mars bar is alive and well in Scotland with more than a fifth of chip shops serving it up alongside deep fried Snickers, Creme Eggs, and pizzas. But in Glasgow, Scotland’s biggest city (and the third largest in the whole of the UK), tastes are far more sophisticated when it comes to takeaway cuisine.

Takeaway Glasgow embraces a wider variety of regional and ethnic food than just cod and chips.  Many Italians from provinces like Frosinone between Rome and Naples and Lucca in north-west Tuscany settled in Glasgow, originally working as Hokey Pokey (a slang term for ice cream)  vendors and many others succumbed to the conventional Scots taste and opened up chippies. In the 1960s and 1970s Glasgow was the preferred destination for many Asian-Scots who settled mainly in the Pollokshields area. Coming from across the Indian sub continent from Pakistan, India and Bangladesh, these naturalised Glaswegians brought   the diversity of their regional cuisine and created a stunning variety of fusion foods.

Indian takeaway Glasgow style has a sound heritage to build on, especially since the UK’s supposed favourite national dish of Chicken Tikka Masala was invented in the city by Ahmed Aslam Ali at his Shish Mahal restaurant (although some experts claim that it’s an authentic Mughlai recipe).Scots MSPs are pushing to put Glasgow’s chicken tikka masala on a par with Parma’s Parmesan cheese or French Champagne.  Glasgow is also home to many Chinese migrants who have clustered around the Garnethill and Charing Cross areas of the city, creating one of Europe’s largest “Chinatowns”.

The Chinese community in Scotland comes largely from Mainland China and Hong Kong and their distinctive cuisine and culture is displayed in the variety of restaurants and practitioners of traditional Chinese medicine and treatments..  Chinese food is among the most popular Glasgow food delivery menu choices   and also reflects that cultural diversity.Hong Kong style Chinese food is very popular, although you will get superb take away examples of any style of regional Chinese takeaway in Glasgow – with or without the battered confection!
