Before you start your personal wine cellar design there are many things that you need to find out about wine cellars. Some manuals make it appear like you can easily create your personal cellar when in fact the only simple aspect is assembling the wall mounted wine rack. Most of it may be very difficult to get right and you have to get quite technical before you can get it right. You may be much better off keeping your wine at a facility that lets you store and then get it when you need tohave it.
Temperatures
The best temperatures for wine is in between 50F and 60F (10C and 13C). It can be tougher than you think to keep wine at this temperature constantly. Central heating may be the main offender in disrupting potential wine storage. Your heater could be on in the daytime raising the temperature well past the suitable storage temperatures.
Then in the evening as soon as the heating system ispowered down your wine is subjected to a fall in temperatures. The wine will have expanded and then contracted as a result of temperature changes. One method to avoid this is to use your basement, which is the best substitute for the stone walled cellars in old mansions.
Unfortunately a central heating boiler within the cellar can trigger those detrimental temperatures fluctuations which are so detrimental for wine. To maintain your basement cellar with the right temperature you must ensure your basement is well insulated with odorless insulation material.
The Amount of Light
The basement is probably the greatest spot for your wine cellar design because it won’t expose your wine collection to light. Light increases deteriorationin your wines. Red wines don’t have this issue as much because they generally can be found in dark tinted wine bottles that cut down on exposure to light.
White wine and champagnes however are very responsive to light and this is heightened by the truth that they generally come in light colored wine bottles. So make certain your wine cellar is dark with very minimal natural light coming through.
Vibrating Equipment
Wine is responsive to vibrations and movements. Ideally whenever wine is put in a cellar it should be lying flat with the label pointed upwards. If washing machines and dryers are anywhere near your wine cellar then it may trigger some problems for your wine. These factors should assist you decide if cellaring at home is right for you.
